In this article, I’m going to discuss the proper way to place your deer stand and control your scent so you will have a greater success rate when you’re out hunting. Whether you hunt from a tree stand or a box stand, these pointers will help you increase the amount of deer you see and kill.
The first thing I’m going to talk about is proper stand placement. The most ideal spot for a deer stand is where you get maximum visibility but also remain almost hidden to any potential deer you see. Pretend you’re plot of land is shaped like a compass and you have three lanes facing West, North and East. Your stand should be in the middle of the compass with the front of your stand facing North. You should have windows cut out to the West and the East while the backside of your stand is only for entering and exiting.
Some people like to place their stand on the treeline of the woods while others prefer to stay out in the open and hope the deer do not see them turning their heads through the peep holes. Referring to our “compass” scenario, I would suggest putting your box stand on the tree line and cutting small openings where necessary through the tree branches. If you follow these steps, no deer should ever see you but you will have full surveillance over their entire area.
Moving on from tree stands, I’m going to start focusing on covering your scent so deer are less likely to smell you. A deer’s nose is arguably stronger and more trained than a dog’s. Deer often spend their entire lives in areas measuring less than 50 acres so they grow very accustomed to the smell of their surroundings. If a hunter marches in smelling like his day job or even worse, his cologne, the deer are going to know something is different so they will be a lot more cautious while looking for food.
To help fight your natural human smell, take the following tips into account. Try washing your clothes with scentless laundry detergent then hang them out to dry on a tree. Also, try to only wear your hunting clothes while your hunting. When you’re done with a hunt, take your clothes off and set them in a scentless area like outside. Just be sure to keep them safe from the rain.
