Camouflage is used these days by hunters and people from the military. But what exactly is camouflage? The word camouflage comes from the French word camoufler which means, “to blind or veil.” Camouflage is used to disguise an object or a person in plain sight to keep it concealed from something or someone.

How did the history of camouflage begin? The first recorded use of camouflage dates back to the 14th century, in feudal Japan. Ninjas used dark camouflage colours during their operations which usually occurred during the darkness (dusk till dawn). There were also times when ninjas would wear clothing that would blend with the operating environment.

During the 18th century, smaller irregular units of rangers or scouts were the first to adopt drab shades of brown and green as their unit colours. It took a few more years for major armies to be convinced to change their brightly coloured uniforms. But in 1857, the British army in India was forced to dye their red tunics and white drill uniforms with neutral tones like khaki. Although it started out as a temporary measure, since they had too many casualties in war, the colour became a standard in Indian service by the 1880s. In 1902, during the Second Boer War, khaki became the standard colour of the uniforms of the entire British army.

During the same year, the United States army started wearing khaki. Some military units started wearing camouflage in self-defence against the increasing accuracy and rate of fire of guns.

In 1906, the Italian army in the Alps started using grey-green (grigio-verde) and by 1909, it became the standard colour for the uniform of the entire Italian army. In 1908, the Russian army also started wearing khaki uniforms. By 1910, the German army started using field grey (feldgrau) colour for their battledress.

Before these different armies started wearing camouflage, they tended to wear bright colours with bold, impressive designs that were supposed to intimidate the enemy, to make units easily identifiable in the fog of war, to foster unit cohesion, to attract new recruits and to reduce desertion.

In 1915, the French army gave up their stylish white gloves and red pantaloons after a crushing defeat by the Germans. They enlisted the services of artists that would help develop stealthier attire. The Section de Camouflage (Camouflage Department) was established. It was first headed by Eugene Corbin and then by Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola.

They were mostly painters, sculptors and theatre-set artists. These artists helped create hand-painted uniforms but since technology had not yet been developed to mass produce the hand-painted uniforms, they were restricted to exposed individuals such as forward artillery observers and snipers. In addition to uniforms, they also created decoy tanks, false bridges and even paper-mache horse carcasses that were used by snipers as blinds.

In 1915, De Scevola was responsible for building an observation tree that was made of steel with bark camouflage. By 1916, such trees became popular with the French and British armies. In 1917, painted canvas netting was introduced and by the end of the war, 7 million square yards of canvas netting had been used.

By this time, other countries realized the advantage of camouflage and soon established their own units of artists, designers and even architects.

Mass production of uniforms started during World War I. By World War II, camouflage uniforms became more common on individual soldiers.

In the late seventies to the early eighties, the American 2nd Armoured Cavalry Regiment stationed in Europe started using digital camouflage pattern on its vehicles. At around the same time, the Australian Army also experimented with digital camouflage on their helicopters.

More recently, the digital camouflage patterns have been adopted by the Canadian Army and Air Force, the United States Marine Corps (MARPAT), the United States Army (ACUPAT) and most of the military of Jordan.

In mid-2006 South Korea adopted a digital camouflage pattern similar to that of USMC MARPAT.

These days camouflage patterns have become part of civilian life but unbeknownst to the present generation, camouflage had become part of Parisian fashion in 1914. During the 1960s artists began using camouflage in their works (e.g. Andy Warhol, Alain Jacquet, etc.)

Modern military-patterned clothing at first found its civilian market among hunters and through military surplus. Eventually, it became popular among civilians because it’s tough, well-made and cheap in the United States and other countries.

Jim Crumley a hunting enthusiast is said to be the person responsible for military camouflage going mainstream. In the late seventies, he used a Magic Marker to draw vertical tree trunk lines on some pairs of tie-dyed coats and pants that he owned. His patented “Trebark” design was born and it became a very popular brand.

Recently, camouflage is still a big part of civilian fashion – from street wear to high fashion labels which makes use of “faux-camouflage.”

In some countries like Aruba, Barbados and other Caribbean nations however, civilians are not allowed to wear camouflage, including children and tourists.

Different methods are used for freezing wild game. Some techniques preserve game for a longer period of time than others.

In determining the method of freezing to use, factors such as expense, convenience and length of time freshness is maintained are to be considered. Discussed are some of the more popular methods, including one not so main stream or well known method that has also proven effective.

A very effective method of preserving the freshness of wild game for an extended time is vacuum sealing with one of the many quality vacuum sealers that are available on the market today. The purchase of a quality vacuum seal unit and plastic bag material can be expensive and may not be the best choice for individuals for small amounts of game to freeze.

Freezing the game submerged in water in a container is another effective approach to preserving for an extended period of time and preventing freezer burn. This works well for small game such as duck, rabbit, squirrel and fish. However, this approach takes up more freezer space and is not appropriate for ground meat.

Using freezer paper is a method that has been used as long as memory serves me. It is good for large quantities of game such as deer. Before the common practice vacuum sealing, my family used it for many years to wrap beef, pork and deer. However, this approach allowed the meat to freezer burn sooner than with vacuum sealing. In addition, there was much time and effort cutting the paper, folding and taping.

Having discussed some of the more popular methods and their advantages, there is one little known method that is easy and convenient since you don’t have to get out the vacuum seal unit for a small amount of game and also preserves the game for an extended period of time. The average household already has an abundance of the material needed for use in this process.

Use of plastic grocery bags and newspaper have proven to be a very good combination of wrapping material for freezing wild game. Occasionally unused plastic bags stick to others brought from the grocery; these are preferred to the used ones. Begin by placing the meat into the plastic grocery bag and wrapping it tightly to remove the air.

Fold an outer wrapping of newspaper tightly around the meat and tape securely with freezer tape to keep the plastic tight and limiting air exposure. This approach results in an extended time of freshness and is almost as effective at preventing freezer burn as the vacuum seal method. In event a busy schedule prevents reading the daily newspaper; this will allow you to keep the news on ice until you can catch up on your reading. However, it will be history then, but there is much to be said about history; if we don’t learn from it we have a tendency to repeat it.
